Miniature Horses
At Kels & Kel, we breed American Miniature Horses. All of our horses are registered with the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) and the American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR). The AMHA only recognizes horses 34" and under at the last mane hair while, AMHR recognized horses 38" and other. There are two classes of minis: "A" sized or 34" and under and "B" sized 34-38". They typically weigh between 150-250 lbs.
Miniature Horses are considered a breed of horse rather than pony as the breed standard strives to create a tiny horse with the conformation of a full sized horse. A good quality mini should look just like a big horse that has been shrunken. The breed was created from a variety of full sized horse breed and ponies. They chose the smallest horses they could find and bred them together over many generations. American Miniature Horses originated in England, where they bred small horses to pull the ore carts in the coal mines. This is where minis get their pulling strength. Miniature horses were also pets for royalty.
Mini horses are a very versatile breed. They can be used for driving, jumping, obstacle, showing, companion animals, therapy horse and awesome pets. Although miniature horses can be ridden by very small children (65lbs and under), we do not sell minis for riding. We primarily use our minis to pull carts (called driving). Mini horses can easily pull two adults all over town when they are in shape. We have also done therapy work with our minis taking them to visit hospice care patients. One of our minis, Wonder was certified as a therapy horse through the Delta Society.
Miniature horses come in a WIDE variety of colors. If you have seen the color in a full sized horse, you can most likely find it in a mini. They can have blue, green or brown eyes or a combination. We specialize in Overo miniature horses with blue eyes. We like all our minis to be 34" or smaller and focus on horses that can perform. We emphasize on amazing personalities, great conformation and fluid movement with exotic markings.
If you have would like more information on these amazing little horses, please visit the registry websites or shoot us an email. We would be happy to share our experiences with you.
